San Antonio International Airport’s Terminal C Nears Halfway Construction Mark
The San Antonio International Airport (SAT) is making significant progress on its $1.7 billion Terminal C expansion, with construction nearing the halfway mark. A recent milestone involved the installation of a 300-pound steel beam, signed by local leaders, signifying this crucial stage. The project, which broke ground in December 2024, aims to double the airport's size and is on schedule for a 2028 opening.
By December, crews expect to have the facility enclosed and utilities activated, allowing interior work to commence. The new Terminal C will feature 18 gates, 30-foot high ceilings, advanced security checkpoints, two 10,000-square-foot airline club lounges, and a 44,000-square-foot food court. Hensel Phelps serves as the general contractor, with Corgan and Lake Flato as architects.
Funding for the project comes from FAA grants, the federal infrastructure bill, airport revenue, fees, and bonds. Adjacent to Terminal C, a $132 million parking garage with 10,000 new spaces is also under construction, expected to open in late 2027. This expansion is part of a broader $2.5 billion strategic development plan approved by the San Antonio City Council in 2021, positioning the airport for future growth despite recent dips in air travel.
Practical implication: This major infrastructure investment is critical for San Antonio's future economic development and capacity to handle increased air travel demand.
