Microsoft Acquires 600 Acres in Woodward, Iowa, for Data Center Development
Microsoft acquired 600 acres of land in Woodward, Iowa, on October 8, for a prospective data center campus. This significant land purchase, located between Highway 141 and Seminole Avenue in Dallas County, was disclosed during an October 12 meeting with local residents. The property had been rezoned from agricultural to an Eco Business Park District in June 2026, a process that involved the council waiving standard additional readings of the ordinance.
Local opposition emerged during the public meeting, where approximately 300 residents questioned the lack of a vote on the project. Jackie Nickolaus, Microsoft's land development manager, informed attendees that the campus design phase is expected to take two to three years, with initial construction of the first building requiring another two years. She clarified that the facility would support cloud computing and data storage, not AI training. While the exact transaction value remains undisclosed, comparable land in the Eco Business Park suggests a potential value of around $37.4 million. This development underscores the ongoing demand for large-scale infrastructure sites and the potential for community engagement challenges in such projects.
