Los Angeles County Allocates $15M for Supportive Housing Conversion in Norwalk
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently approved an additional $15 million in funding to advance a significant supportive housing initiative at the Metropolitan State Hospital campus in Norwalk. This allocation targets the conversion of disused buildings, originally constructed in the 1920s and vacant for over two decades, into a "mental healthcare village."
The project involves six buildings. Initial phases, already underway, focus on renovating three structures into a 16-bed locked mental health rehabilitation facility and a 70-bed interim housing complex with comprehensive wraparound services. The newly approved funds will specifically facilitate the conversion of a remaining building into 60 studio and one-bedroom apartments designated for formerly homeless adults, alongside common areas and staff offices.
Supervisor Janice Hahn emphasized the transformation of these long-vacant buildings into vital resources for treatment and long-term housing. The development team includes PATH, Torti Gallas, MIG, and NAC. The locked facility and interim housing are slated for completion between December 2027 and January 2028, with the permanent supportive housing units expected to open in 2029. This project represents a critical effort to expand mental health services and housing solutions for vulnerable populations in Los Angeles County.
