Malibu Residents Face Coastal Erosion and Sinkhole Damage, Prompting Emergency Declaration
A 25-foot-deep sinkhole on Sea Level Drive in Malibu has severely impacted coastal properties, including the home of actor Nicolas Cage. The sinkhole, which opened in September, swallowed Cage's driveway and rendered the road impassable, leading the city to red-tag 31 homes and issue evacuation orders. These orders remain in effect, with gas and power lines shut off to the affected street.
The situation prompted the city of Malibu to declare a state of emergency on October 7, citing "threatened conditions of extreme peril" and the potential for severe El Niño impacts. This declaration provides officials with greater flexibility for emergency response. Property owners on Sea Level Drive, including Cage, have obtained permits for repair work, which involves excavation, debris removal, and the installation of sandbags to protect against strong waves and coastal erosion.
The Sea Level Drive Homeowners Association is reportedly responsible for the repairs, with a new contractor taking over in early October. The ongoing challenges highlight the increasing risks of coastal erosion and natural disasters for real estate development and property ownership in vulnerable areas, necessitating robust mitigation strategies and insurance considerations.
